Pointing a subdomain of an existing domain

Instructions on pointing a subdomain of a domain you or your customer owns

Point a subdomain of a domain (subdomain.example.com)

Pointing a subdomain of a domain that you already own requires you to add (or update in some cases) an CNAME Record that will point to a hostname. This CNAME address will be provided to you by a support team member.

You will create one CNAME Record for the subdomain:

  1. For "subbomain.example.com" the host name might be "subdomain" or "subdomain.example.com" depending on your DNS provider.

  2. Value of the CNAME address should match the provided hostname

Notes:

  • Ensure that once the new CNAME is entered, there are no additional CNAME records for the same subdomain: subdomain.example.com. Having multiple CNAME records (with other CNAME addresses) will cause your domain to bounce back and forth from our host and your old host.

  • Once you've added the CNAME record, it can take 24-48 hours for the new CNAME Record values to propagate across the internet. But if have not visited the subdomain recently on your computer or if it is new, you should be able to see the domain resolve within 60 minutes.

Point a wildcard (*) subdomain

This option is recommended if you plan to host multiple subdomains under the same domain. This option allows you to add the CNAME Record only one time to support all possible subdomains in the future. This saves time so that you do not need to make DNS changes for each new subdomain you would like to use.

Similar to the normal subdomain, you will create one CNAME record for the subdomain:

  1. For "*.example.com" the host name might be * or *.example.com depending on your DNS provider.
